Have a wild time at Shetland's first ever Nature Festival!
Shetland is one of Britain’s leading wildlife watching destinations. Don’t miss an opportunity to join a variety of specialised wildlife tours with local rangers, photography sessions or expert talks.
Organisers of Shetland’s first ever Festival of Nature, to be piloted from 5th to 12th July 2008, are calling on local businesses to come on board and get involved by offering trips, tours, arts and crafts, and workshops to feature in an exciting programme of events planned for this summer. With an outline programme featuring everything from guided walks and family fun days to talks on wildlife photography and sketching, organiser Helen Moncrieff, South Shetland warden for the RSPB, in conjunction with partners including Scottish Natural Heritage and VisitShetland, hopes to raise awareness amongst both locals and visitors of the islands’ extensive array of wildlife, geology and landscape.
The festival will be the first of it’s type in Shetland, with an overall aim to celebrate Shetland’s nature – from geology to climate, plants to puffins. It will be a series of events held quite literally across the length of Shetland, from Fair Isle to Muckle Flugga, and will also include a presentation from television presenter, cameraman and naturalist Simon King.
Whether you are a visitor to or resident of Shetland, why not join in with some of the events to help you enjoy Shetland’s unique nature. Early July is a great time of year to see and hear (and smell!) what a great variety wildlife occurs in Shetland in summer.
The festival aims:-
• To offer fun, informative and inspirational experiences to visitors to and residents of Shetland
• To raise awareness of Shetland’s natural history
• To promote Shetland as a unique destination for nature
• To bring economic benefits to local businesses and organisations, and to demonstrate potential benefits of responsible wildlife-related tourism
