On behalf of Shetland Arts we welcome you to Screenplay 2008.
This year’s festival looks at ‘Heroes and Villains’ in their various guises, from cowboys to alien invaders, ‘femmes fatales’ and heroic animals, the programme offers a range of films encompassing a variety of tastes, ages and interests. Our curators Mark Kermode and Christopher Frayling are no strangers to Shetland: Mark curated last year’s festival, and Christopher was here during the 1999 Tall Ships Race to speak about ‘Maritime Movies’. Both are informed and entertaining speakers, and will be supported by film critic Linda Ruth Williams and film and TV director Douglas Mackinnon who opens the festival with a real treat for followers of the Time Lord – a full length screening of Doctor Who and the Sontaran Strategy.
If you love Westerns - and even if you think you don’t - you will thrill to John Wayne’s complex performance in one of the best Westerns ever made, The Searchers; and Christopher Frayling’s illustrated introduction to the iconic Once Upon a Time in the West is frankly unmissable.
Linda Ruth Williams will be looking at two sides of Glenn Close, as the spurned mistress in Fatal Attraction, and the menacing puppy thief in 101 Dalmatians. If you love being scared stiff, then George Sluizer’s original The Vanishing should do the trick.
There are thrills and chills for young people in Suzie Templeton’s award winning Peter and the Wolf – a fabulous animated film that will appeal to adults too.
The perfect antidote to all this suspense is to bathe in the unashamed pleasure of Local Hero, guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face and a lump in your throat.
We hope to show work by some of our own ‘local heroes’ with Shetland film makers invited to submit short films for screening over the weekend.
Mark Kermode closes the festival with a discussion and screening of a modern epic Western, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; new take on an old legend, and a great way to finish four days of film-going.
We look forward to seeing you at The Garrison Theatre!
