Steve Kaufmann, Peerie Willie, John Goldie and Martin Taylor at the 2005 Peerie Willie Johnson Shetland Guitar FestivalThe Shetland Guitar Festival is, in local festival terms the baby of the lot, with the first event being promoted in 2005.
Shetland is, more often than not, musically associated with the fiddle for very obvious reasons. However one of our best-loved musicians was the internationally acclaimed guitarist 'Peerie' Willie Johnson, who sadly passed away in summer 2007. (By the way peerie is the Shetland word for small.)
In honour of his already assured place in Shetland music history and in recognition of what he has done for guitar music in general this festival focuses on guitar music in all its forms, including workshops on the accompaniment style Willie himself 'invented'.
