Welcome to Shetland

Shetland Fiddle Frenzy

Programme

You can choose your own course either learning morning and afternoon or taking a break in the afternoon to take in some of the cultural trips on offer.

Each tutor is a highly experienced Shetland Player with a wealth of knowledge to pass on. The week is split in two so that students can experience styles, hints and tips from more than one tutor in the week.

You also get the chance for one of our famous “wan to wan” sessions where Bryan Gear will devote individual time to students to improve any part of their playing, from technique to tune learning.

Wan to Wans what a great idea! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to pick the tutor’s brains

We also have an overseeing tutor not tied to any particular class to fill in any gaps or help with musical problems that may arise and to ensure that each student gets precisely what they need musically from the event.

We limit the number of full time Students taking part in Fiddle Frenzy to 60. Creating small classes with as much individual help as is necessary

This ensures that each participant-

- Leave Shetland with a much wider knowledge of our unique music and culture.
- Leave us with a much greater knowledge of (and hopefully love for) our islands themselves.
- Leaves Shetland having made many new friends (musical and otherwise).
- Receives a high quality programme and value for money.
- Enjoys the experience and simply have a whale of a time - in fact we might even see some of them too.
- Is totally and utterly exhausted - in the nicest possible sense.

Additionally you can also opt to simply learn the tunes via basic workshops or take part in the afternoon workshops that include bowing techniques and other additional skills.

As such, you will not only leave us with a whole new, personal 'music book' of local tunes to take away with you, but also be much more knowledgeable regarding playing skills and, of course, the many of the unique and individual styles that combine to form Shetland Traditional Fiddle Music.

“always something inspiring to listen to…a bonus that musicians from the groups in concerts joined in the sessions”
