Several flights per day to and from the major Scottish airports, and a new route direct to Bergen this summer, make Shetland an easy destination to reach by air.
The new route operated by Loganair was introduced on 7th June 2008, and due to popular demand, will operate three time a week (Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) from end of May until end of August with one flight a day from Shetland and Bergen.
Flybe's franchise-holder Loganair operates frequent daily flights to Shetland from Aberdeen (55 mins), Edinburgh (1 hour 25 mins), Glasgow, Inverness and Orkney, with onward connections to London and international destinations. Visit the Flybe website.
Aberdeen is the usual hub for air passengers bound for Shetland from Scandinavia and the Netherlands. Edinburgh and Glasgow have many direct flights to other European destinations, by-passing London's 'bottleneck' airports.

Arriving in Shetland by air
The busiest route is Aberdeen-Shetland, with 3 flights daily in summer.
Aberdeen Airport is run by the British Airports Authority and has a frequent bus service from the city centre bus and train stations. NB Airport security at Aberdeen is particularly strict, in part because of the North Sea oilfield traffic.
Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd operates Shetland's main airport at Sumburgh, 25 miles south of the county town of Lerwick. The airport is on the service bus route and has a taxi rank and hire car desk. Free short-term and long-term parking is available at Sumburgh.
Flying to Shetland is generally more expensive than the Northlink ferries but journey times are much quicker - less than an hour in the air compared with about 12 hours by sea. Although most flights depart and arrive on time, in summer the schedules can be disrupted by fog and in winter by gales, so be prepared for delays.
Direct Flight also operates inter-island flights to Fair Isle, Foula and Out Skerries - from Tingwall airstrip, seven miles west of Lerwick.
