Welcome to Shetland

Tourist Information Centre

The customer services team at VisitShetland are dedicated to providing you with an exclusive visitor experience, with excellence being key to our service delivery.

It is important to us that you have access to the holiday information you need to effectively plan your holiday. We appreciate that you may like to plan your holiday, and to do this, you need to gather information from a variety of sources. Our two Tourist Information Centres are the first place to start, whether by e-mail, telephone, fax or post.

The main Tourist Information Centre is based at the Market Cross, in the heart of the Old Town of Lerwick. Another one is located at the Sumburgh Airport. A key contact, we can assist with your holiday planning before you arrive, during your holiday and for feedback after you have returned home.

Information, Advice and Holiday planning:

We can advise on your travel plans, suggest alternatives or provide an outline itinerary for your stay. In addition, we have an extensive information range on various elements of your holiday and contacts across the industry. This means that we can check the latest information, talk to the right people, and help you pull your holiday together.

Accommodation Reservations:

We have an excellent accommodation booking service. Being in a close contact with all establishments, we have up to date information on hand to assist in quick and easy accommodation selection. Whether you are staying in one establishment, or touring and have multi-stay needs, we will be happy to find and book your accommodation on your behalf.

Mail Order Service:

We operate a popular mail order service, sending our map, guides, publications, CDs, gifts and other goodies around the globe. Our visitors call us looking for items that evoke their memories of Shetland. People who have spent their holiday here and returned home call up to buy that book they couldn’t quite fit in their suitcase. And those who love to prepare for their holiday find us a heaven sent source. Check out the range on page 41 or call us if there is something you would particularly like.

Visitor Shop:

When you arrive, you’ll find our visitor shop has shelves of useful publications, maps, guides, postcards, gifts, souvenirs and crafts. It is an ideal place to start or end your holiday.

Boat Trips and Guided Tours:

We are happy to provide a booking service for boat trips and tours. There is a range to choose from: boat trips, street trails, walking tours, and group or individual bus and car tours. They can take you to the hidden treasures and the secret places and are full of insider tips.

Events:

Shetland has many vibrant, spirited and colourful events. Come to see some of the best music, maritime and fire festivals in the world. Contact us for the latest update or check out our regularly updated events calendar.

Trout Fishing Permits:

Our plentiful waters ensure an abundance of fish. So head to the hills, find some space and fish all day! Just you, the tackle – and over 300 lochs. Lerwick Visitor Information Centre is the place to pick up your permit. Expect to pay £25 for a yearly membership.

Bureau de Change:

Coming from overseas? In our Lerwick Visitor Information Centre you can exchange cash and travellers cheques for pounds sterling.

OUR INFORMATION NETWORK

Shetland’s information network ensures you have information and a friendly face close to hand, wherever you are during your stay. The network is made up of:

GATEWAYS (2)

Aimed at assisting you as soon as you arrive, a range of general information is provided.

The Welcome Lounge at Sumburgh Airport is a comfortable area in which to sit, research and plan – with printed material and internet access. This facility is fully staffed. On arrival at Lerwick Ferry Terminal, you will find general information to point you in the right direction.

NEIGBOURHOOD INFORMATION POINTS

Operated by local staff, you will find general information, of a local flavour. With various opening times, check these with the Tourist Information Centres before you commence your touring. The 12 centres are located at: Unst Heritage Centre, Fetlar Interpretive Centre, Old Haa Museum, Tangwick Haa Museum, Shetland Jewellery, The Baker’s Rest, Yealtaland Books in Scalloway, Bressay Heritage Centre, Hoswick Visitor Centre, Quendale Water, Fair Isle Bird Observatory & The Cabin Museum in Vidlin.

TOURIST INFORMATION POINTS

For out of hours, 24 hour information, there are Information Points located at all the inter island ferry terminals. Updated on a regular basis, they provide basic information on that area, including accommodation, places to eat and ferry times.

We plan adventures for a living. Let us help you plan yours.
