Pubs and bars are an important part of Shetland's social and musical life, with a wide variety of venues to suit most tastes.
Scottish licensing hours apply in Shetland and are fairly liberal compared with some neighbouring countries. Normal pub opening hours are 1100 - 2300, with regular and occasional extensions even beyond that, particularly at weekends and when there's a festival taking place. The minimum age to buy alcohol is 18. Proof-of-age checks are common.
Most bars also serve coffee and non-alcoholic drinks. All cafes, bars and restaurants are smoke-free.
'Pub Grub' is popular in Shetland and many hotel bars serve excellent food.
Several pubs and hotels offer regular traditional music sessions throughout the summer, thanks to Shetland Arts Trust and its award-winning 'Simmer'n Sessions' programme, for the visitor who wants to hear some of Shetland's world-renowned traditional music in an informal setting.
